According to BetaNews (http://www.betanews.com/article/Microsoft_Yahoo_to_Link_IM_Networks/1129075667), Microsoft and Yahoo are planning on merging their Instant Messenger clients together to combat the threat of programs such as Trillian (which allows you to talk on many networks). This will also allow them to offset the huge lead of AOL in the IM market.

I hope that never happens :-( there are so many messengers though, some of them should merge. It would be nice if there was only one, but totally customizable. I LOVE being able to hide in yahoo. If they take that away :bawling:

edit: further look, they won't be removing, but I'm curious how certain features will merge... Think this is the first step towards a unified messenger? Think that would be a good or bad thing?

Well I don't use Yahoo Messenger. The only messenger on my computer at the moment is MSN. I guess if you use both it could be a good thing because you would only have 1 program running but then again your msn friends and your yahoo friends would be combined unless they thing of an interesting way or merging the 2 messengers.

Some of them maybe should merge. But if yahoo merges with anything Microsoft I fear Microsoft will kill the item. I don't like MSN messenger. I know that is my opinion but I think Yahoo's is much better. Personally I use GAIM. It allows me to connect to almost all major messengers. AOL, Yahoo, and ICQ are the main ones. It also lets you connect to a few others. Jabber, etc.

GAIM is an open source messenger, which means with the correct source code download it runs on most platforms. Not just Windows.

I don't think yahoo should in any way get involved with Microsoft.

Good. I like gaim. Google I think is having fun ticking microsoft off. lol.

A number of top programmers and such have left Microsoft to work for Google.

Google's probably one of the few with the bankroll who can do so. I believe they are also sniffing around getting a stake in AOL as well.
