having some issues with windows... My computer is sitting at 100% CPU usage, and the only thing I'm currently doing is printing. It sticks at 100% when everything else is closed. I get periodic spikes down to 0, but it always returns to 100 shortly there after. Sorting based on CPU usage, I keep getting an image name of "system" thats eating everything up. It seems to spike differently based on what is printing at the moment (page feed causes spikes down to 0% for instance). Not always consistent. Ever have any problems like this?

WinXP, have a 832C HP printer. Using Dell Dimension 4500 desktop. nothing too unusual on the box.

Does it do this right after boot up?

Have you run virus / spyware scans?

Any unusual processes running?

Interesting... the printer just finished printing, and its badk to normal CPU usage. For about an hour, I could do hardly anything at all. Is there some way to check that the printer is running effeciently and fix it? Its obviously screwing up something. Need it fixed, since I'm printing things alot here!

virus/spyware, don't have virus stuff, but run spyware checking with regularity.

well, the problem is fixed, just I don't want this to happen every time I touch the printer now.

Get a good AVS and have it run & update regularly.
I use Grisoft. Its free and it's reasonably fast.

Make sure your Spyware program is upto date. I'm running 3 right now, adaware, spybot and M$'s.

Make sure the printer driver is the latest. You can try uninstalling and reinstalling the newest from the manufactureers site.

Umm, do a complete scandisk and defrag of your hard drive.

How much space do you have free on C:? If you're out of temp space, it can cause heavy disk thrashing & high CPU loads.

I'll look into grisoft. I use Spybot and Ad-aware. They are always up to date (I check at least once a week). I'm not huge on virusware. I never download anything I don't know is coming (ie phonecall, previous email). However, I know stuff happens... I'll get a AVS.

I'll check on the drivers. Been a while since I did an update. That might be the issue.

Defrag happens periodicaly. I don't do scandisk that often. I heard that doing it too often can create havoc on your disks.

disk space is fine. got a 20G disk, 7 free. I periodically clean it up. I'm all for my computer being nice and tidy :smirk:

HP Printers sometimes suck a lot out of the system. I have one and don't have that problem often, but it does happen every now and then...and mainly with pdfs. I have more of a problem with XP trying to block the printer. It really does not like the printers software.
