This company has like a 5 page ad in this months PC World magazine.

http://www.1AND1.com

They seem to have some okay packages, has anyone else heard of them or used their service?

250 gb transfer per month on the 2.99 / month plan.... I'd do some more investigating before putting something important there, smells a little fishy.

1&1 is the largest hosting company in Europe. They ran a 3 years for free special a while back. Their goal is to be the unsurpassed largest host. I'd do a search on Webhostingtalk.com though. Some folks love em, others can't wait to leave.

I thought from what I saw they piled on the major points people looked for in their packages...but with sql databases, etc they don't give you those unless you get up into the higher up packages.

I agree that some more fishing should be done on them before using their service. I was just looking to see if others held the same opinion. I like the host i have....but I haven't required anything to intense. The host i use give you all 999 email addresses .... 999 ftp accounts ... unlimited mailing lists .... 999 subdomains ... 999 sql databases.... has some nice tools...not bad for the price.

I don't think i could for what i need....however they probably would because by the time i use all those i would most likely be over the space amount and bandwidth.

I used 1and1, I got a free trial hosting from them. I registered a domain, and 1/2way thru my hosting I tried to transfer the domain to hosting with the company I work for and they wouldnt release it. When my domain expired, 1and1 "renewed" it for me even tho I requested they do not, and when I refused to pay they sent me into collections.

My opinion of them is NOT that high.

I think a lesson every potential web hosting consumer should learn is to register your own domain, don't let the hosting company do it. Otherwise transfering is likely going to be a pain.

I usually register domains for my clients. Once they've paid for their site, I go back and change the ownership to them. This way, it's in their name, and they can do what they like with it. I give them the option of managing it or letting us manage it (which mainly deals with the billing side of things), but I let them know I won't renew a name until payment is received. (I bill 30 days before it's up.)

Challenge for consumers is finding webhosts who won't hold their customers hostage. I don't, but I've heard alot of horror stories. I've picked up a couple of clients from 1&1 recently, and several of my local competition.

Thats a good service when you give the customer the option...

Offering free service is something the ISP's Earthlink, AOL, and Netscape try to do if you go to cancel...then they want you to call back "just to make sure the new service is what you expected".....lol....watch out for free trail services....they usually try to get you somehow....

Yeah, I got lured in by their 4.99 domain registrations.
