Ok, I have an unusual issue.

I have a DVD of some video we shot, and it seemed to make sense to make a DVD out of it at the time... But I dont have access to the raw video anymore, I just have my copy of the DVD... and I want to convert it to a web-ready format so I can share it online.

Easy you say...

HA. Not so says me.

Most of the Tutorials I can find are either for ripping .VOB files to the harddrive and demacrovisioning them for bootlegging commercial DVDs, which I dont need to do... and the DVD ripping/conversion software I can find for NOT making a ready to burn bootleg is mostly for ripping directly to DIVX... which again, is not ideally what I want to do...

Normally, I would just play the DVD out into my PVR and then Convert the .ASF file into a format that is more friendly... but I managed to break it... so I cant do that.

Any suggestions would be great.

hmm....this problem hopefully will be answered but not by me. I don't rip many dvd's....and I'm actually kind of not sure what you are talking about. You want it in a specific file format? And what do you want to play it on? YOur computer?

Ideally I want a raw .avi file, that I can convert into several other formats... Specifically, however, I am looking to make a file that can be compressed to QT or Realmedia to stream online.

What format is it in now?

There are a lot of things out there that can convert files. You may have to have a program that allows you to rip it to your computer. Once on your computer you need to have a program to converts it. Let me look into burning with the avi format and I may be able to give you a better answer.

you definitely have to start with first ripping the DVD to your hard drive....you can still use DVDDecrypter or DVD Shrink.....then use DVD2AVI. i think you can make a raw avi file with it.

or

you could use DGMPGDec to decode the file with AVISynth and virtualdub and create an avi that can be fed into other programs.

personally, i really dig DivX files for the web.......awesome quality in a small package......i prefer to download files in that format......i wont even look at a quicktime or realmedia movie.

Can you stream DivX, and do you think a Majority of people online have the correct DivX codec for their Home PCs to watch the stream, or will it only be veiwable by net-geeks?

And thanks for the links. I currently do have the DVD ripped to the Harddrive as raw .VOB files, and I was hoping to find some freeware to process them...

i think that DivX is becoming a major player in the codec business.
you can buy dvd players that have the DivX codec built into the hardware now.
you cant say the same thing about realmedia or quicktime (unless its an ipod).

Yes....you can stream DivX. It has the same visual quality as a commercial DVD.
DivX is THE quality video compression software.
according to DivX, the player has been downloaded more than 100 million times......thats quite a few PC geeks.

Thats cool. My only experience with it was some movies a guy at work made for me back in the day on cdrom that I could only play in my pc after some MAJOR hassle finding the CORRECT DivX codec... So if I encode in DivX and post the resulting file online, then post the link in various forum, you feel confident that I am not gonna get a bunch of people going "I can only hear the audio!"?

BTW, I dont care about it working in stand alone players... I just wanna share the file online.

i think now, you'd probably get the same amount of people not having the realmedia or quicktime codec.
