Trekkers unite June 9 for annual festival

Wednesday May 31, 2006
Vulcan Advocate — It’s that time of the year again, the time to boldly go where fans everywhere are awaiting to journey.
Star Date 317437.55. Vulcan Galaxyfest and Spock Days will commence June 9 to 11 with all-new guest stars, games and activities. This year’s Star Trek celebrities are Vaughn Armstrong and Casey Biggs.
Star Trek dealers will be in town selling Trek-related collectibles, memorabilia and official merchandise during this three-day event.
There are three Galaxyfest packages available. The bronze package includes admission to any one event, the silver package includes admission to any two events, and the gold package includes admission to all events . Tickets are still available at the Vulcan Tourism and Trek Station.
The fun kicks off June 9 when the public has their last chance to register at the Tourism and Trek Station. A meet and greet cocktail party will be held featuring a cash bar, music and appetizers.
June 10 begins with the annual Spock Days parade at 10 a.m. Throughout the day the public can participate in several fascinating events including bed races, a bucket brigade, a slo-pitch tournament and a Klingon Fear Factor competition. A Q and A autograph session with Armstrong and Biggs takes place from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Vulcan Legion.
Popular 70s group April Wine will rock Vulcan that night. Lead singer Myles Goodwyn hits the stage at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show are still available.
For those looking for a more quiet way to end the day, The Wizard Of Oz will be featured as the Movie in the Park at the rodeo grounds. Tickets are still available at the Vulcan Tourism and Trek Station.
Star Trek panel discussions and a final farewell will end the weekend on June 11.
Be sure to check the Advocate for all news and updates concerning the festival. Until next time, “live long and prosper.”

The Spock Days experience
Stephanie's Soap Box
Wednesday June 07, 2006
Vulcan Advocate — Do you have your Spock ears ready? Are you practiced for the hand sign?
This coming weekend is Spock Days in Vulcan and I’m sure that you all are just as excited as I am.
Every year, Spock Days gets a little more interesting. Each year, it is a little bit different and a little bit the same.
We can look forward to the standards of Spock Days, the breakfast, parade, bucket brigade, hose laying and bed races.
This year, we have new Star Trek stars coming, Vaughn Armstrong and Casey Biggs. If you’ve never watched Star Trek, then you don’t know that Biggs starred as the Cardassian Damar and that Armstrong is the Star Trek actor that has played the most
characters.
I’ve had the chance to speak to both of them via telephone and I have to say that I think they will be a lot of fun. They’re humorous and have heard of our Star Trek convention from other actors. Both of them are quite excited to be coming to Vulcan.
Of course, one of the features of Spock Days for the adults is the Saturday night cabaret, which is featuring April Wine this year. I get tingly just thinking about April Wine coming to Vulcan and that I’m going to get to hear them performing live, right here in my town. I, to be frank, am excited.
This year, Spock Days gets even more family friendly. For those families who are looking for that extra time to spend together, there will be a movie in the rodeo grounds on a three-story inflatable movie screen.
Just like April Wine, the organizers have chosen a movie that is a classic in its own right, The Wizard of Oz. I can hardly wait for that, too. I honestly don’t know that my kids have seen this movie, but come Friday night, they will have. It will be a wonderful time for us to spend together. Mustn’t forget the bug spray.
I’ve lived in the area for 11 years and have been to my share of Spock Days. I look back on past events at Spock Days and have noticed that each year the event gets a little more well rounded. A little better and a little more ‘all inclusive’ for families.
I think the coordinators have done a marvelous job this year rounding out the events to include everyone in the family. I can’t even begin to imagine how much work it takes to put Spock Days together, but I do know that they will have already started planning next year’s event by this time next week.
Even if you are not a trekker or a closet Star Trek fan, there are plenty of events for you to enjoy regardless of your penchant for the show and characters. I think the coordinators have done a marvelous job with that as well, making this about more than ‘just Star Trek’, and truly making it a total community event.
Whatever you do this weekend, ensure that you find a part of Spock Days to participate in. It will be well worth it.
Vulcan was a good weekend. As per both tradition and curse, it rained, but it did clear up a bit enough for the parade. I did not attend the Meet & Greet, Q&A, however I heard they were quite good.
The dinner at the legion was excellent. The Klingon Fear Factor final challenges took place, and Vaughn and Casey sang some songs from their Blues band. There was also the masquerade and a bit of a memorial for an attendee last year who recently passed away, which involved the Klingon Death Howl.
Unfortunately I was unable to dress up as I was getting over a cold, so that was a tad upsetting especially considering one of the guests played a major Cardassian role on DS9 (Gul Dumar). I gave him my card and he said he'd check out my site.

Some pretty cool pics from Vulcan there Miko!!
Looks like you had some fun. Any very pretty girls?? ;) Did you find a "convention buddy" while you were there?
Too bad you weren't feeling better and couldn't put all the Cardassian make-up on!!
Did you hear any of the April Wine concert?
No... no convention buddies. A few cuties though.
April Wine cancelled on Saturday morning apparently. I suppose they're too high and mighty for Vulcan. Piss on em!
Another thing.. their Virtual Reality Interactive game should be installed by the fall sometime.. they are looking for auditions in Calgary for a Captain, a mean sort of enemy, and 4 non speaking roles. Basically you save the town of Vulcan from alien attack.. a mini version of what's at ST: Experience.

That sounds pretty crummy of April Wine to cancel the day of the concert especially since all the tickets were sold-out!!
I hope they had legitimate reasons for cancelling and that all tickets were refunded!!
shopping queen 06-15-2006, 04:47 PM It was a bummer that you couldn't show off your very cool Cardassian costume but as a fellow costumer, I can totally relate to the problems with having a cold and being in full face makeup. Hopefully you'll be able to do something for your next Alberta con.
Very sad news that the concert did not take place. I am sure there were some very angry attendees. I hope that anyone who bought tickets was refunded at the very least.
I'm going to check out your pics now...can't wait!
