Lizzie Borden had an axe
She gave her father forty whacks
And when the deed was done
She gave her mother forty-one

Fall River, Massachusetts is a sizeable about an hour south of Boston, not far from Providence, RI...and is also the home of Lizzie Borden.

The murders happened over a century ago. Lizzie Borden's house still stands. If you find yourself in Boston...it's possible to take a tour of her house. (And if you are in Boston....stop by Salem and say hello)

But if you dare........you can also choose to spend the night in the house where the murders occured.

And...you will learn the truth about Lizzie Borden. She was tried and acquitted of the murders. The one thing that the rhyme doesn't mention is...Lizzie Borden was found Not Guilty

I saw something about that on Ghost Hunters a while back. Interesting case.

(Also, a good 80's metal band) LOL

That's true, but it had more to do with "professional courtesy" from her community than actual innocence, IIRC. Interesting story, though. I think she was probably guilty and that modern forensics would have easily convicted her. Her neighbors and community, while unwilling to convict and execute the young woman for murder, certainly never believed in her innocence.

Ya well, the big question is ... "Why?"

Or "Why not?"

From what I have gathered from shows and articles on the subject, she wanted more freedom than her "proper" parents would allow her. Also, if she actually was guilty, she very likely had some sort of psychological defect.

She got away with more than just murder... it was patricide... to me that's worse.
