219 - Lay Down Your Burdens, Pt 1
220 - Lay Down Your Burdens, Pt 2
Summary:
Tyrol is suffering from nightmares. When Cally tries to wake him, he brutally attacks her, leaving her bloodied. Seeking answers, he visits Brother Cavil, a priest. Tyrol is dreaming he is jumping from a crosswalk to his death. Cavil tells him he fears that he may be a Cylon like Sharon, and jokingly assures him he isn't because he was, and hadn't seen him at any of the meetings.
Starbuck leads a group of 20 raptors back to Caprica to pick up the resistance group led by Anders. To assist them, they use the nav system from a captured raider and Sharon to increase the jump range. The first jump however loses Racetracks raptor, which ends up in a nebula. Racetrack discovers a hidden planet, and reports back to the fleet. Meanwhile, Starbucks' party arrives at Caprica, but loses another raptor when it jumps into a mountain. They land and locate Anders group, coming under immediate Cylon attack. After a short siege, the Cylons depart and another copy of Cavil steps forward to pray. On returning to Galactica, Tyrol recognizes him as a Cylon, and both he and Sharon are sent to the brig. In the brig, the other Cavil is brought in complaining he isn't a Cylon, until he sees his 'clone'. The one from Caprica informs Roslin and Adama that he is a messanger. That the cylons have decided that the war was a mistake, and left. That humans and cylons would live apart. Roslin suggests spacing them.
The presidential election is in full swing. Baltar is trailing poorly in the polls, lacking any real substance. The discover of the planet however gives him the key to victory, as Zarek pushes him to use it as a central issue, a real planet instead of a metal box. A tired population agrees, and his support grows. After Baltar rebuffs her suggestion that they table the planet until after the election, and manages to sidestep her accusation of treason in the fall of the colonies, Roslin resorts to election rigging with the assistance of Col. Tigh and her aid. When it is discovered, she has to decide between the will of the people and what is truely in their best interests. The will of the people wins out, and Baltar is declared winner.
Baltar is riding on a wave of satisfaction. He has won the election, and he has finally connected with Gina. But all is not as it seems. Gina detonates the warhead that Baltar has sent to her group, destroying Cloud Nine and several other ships in the process as he takes the oath of office.
A devastated Baltar orders immediate colonization, foregoing the logical and organized survey and evaluation of the planet.
A year passes, and we the bulk of the refugees have moved to the planet. Only skeleton crews remain on the fleet ships, much of the military now resigned and trying to make a living on a barely habitable world. It is an obvious refugee city, and discontent and anger are apparent. President Baltar has converted Colonial One into a glorified bachlor pad, and appears to have little concern for the population. As a large Cylon fleet jumps in, Adama and Lee are forced to order a retreat as they are in no condition to fight. The cylons do an impressive flyby and landing, leaving an emotionally battered President Baltar no option but unconditional surrender. As the Cylon occupation begins, a resistance is planned.
Review:
I didn't care for these 2 episodes too much. They seemed rather choppy, and the fast forward seemed to be cliched. Cavil's comments towards Tyrol were strangely familiar, echoing those of Baltar to Boomer. Is this a coincidence, or foreshadowing? A pregnant Cally would seem to indicate the former, as we can safely assume that Tyrol's the father there. Too little time on Caprica. Were there any other survivors left on any of the planets? The election fixing seemed to be a stretch. Poor work on the writers part. Baltar's insanity seems obvious, yet is being overlooked left and right in these episodes. How he manages to win enough support to win, when he's sinmply a single issue man, strikes me as odd. Characters actions are off through out this one. Adama greenlights a rescue mission here, while he shot it down before. Hatch's Zarek was wasted here as well, doing what basically was a glorified cameo. Tyrol as a union rable rouser didn't work for me either. The list goes on. They can mine asteroids, but can't in a year build even mud bricks, or log cabins? I guess the intent was to show that humanity had stagnated and soured in this barely livable place.
So, what worked? Adama obviously staying on Galactica. Dee going to Pegasus. Helo still on Galactica, which would suggest Sharon's still in the brig there. The remains of the fleet high tailing it out of there when they realized they were in no condition for a fight. The cliff hanger left just enough "whats going to happen" to make me wish the next season was now, not October. Oh, the Cylon flybys were a nice touch. Very intimidating. Of all the season 2 episodes though, I really have to rank these my least favorite.
Questions:
- What happened during that missing year?
- Were there any other elections?
- Which Six does Baltar think that is, and just how off-kilter is he now?
- Did Gina blow herself up to send a signal, or just as a suicide?
- Did she download?
- Is the grudge Apollo's carrying towards Starbuck from the drunken Kara's poor choice of words and actions, or something else?
- What happened to Sharron in that year?
- Were the Cavils spaced?
- What have the Cylon's been doing the last year?
- Did they really abandon the Colonies? If so, where did they go?
