View Full Version : Dune Sequel Ready
The SCI FI Channel announced that its upcoming original miniseries sequel Frank Herbert's Children of Dune will premiere at 9 p.m. ET/PT March 16. The six-hour, three-night series follows up the channel's Emmy-Award-winning miniseries Frank Herbert's Dune and is based on the second and third books in Herbert's heralded Dune Chronicles books.

Great news. I really enjoyed the first mini-series much more than the old movie(spent the entire time explaining it to my wife..if you hadnt read the books then you were lost)
I wasn't lost really when I watched them, but SB never missed an opportunity to expand how the scenes went in the novel

Are you talking about the mini series or the 20 year old movie by David Lynch? The mini series was easy to get by anyone but the movie did not explain anything so it left newbies constantly asking questions...aka my wife..I finally stopped waiting for her inevitable question to explain in more detail and started simply commenting...we were at the theatre with another couple and the husband ended up doing the exact same thing :)
Ive seen both and had no problems following. SB just can't help himself when its something he likes...he has to share every detail. Its hard to lose me in a movie...I can follow things better than most, I reckon :)

Had you read the books first?
Ive never read the books. Doesn't mean I can't follow the movie.

I read all the original books.... it helped that I have a copy of the Dune Encyclopedia. Great resource. :)
Without understanding some of the 'back' story, it gets confusing in places. The earlier movie was really bad in how much it glossed over. The miniseries was alot closer to the books in look/feel.

Again on my part of defending the movie over the book - The orginal Dune movie as a kid (not reading the book at that time) was to me and still is a good movie ... sci-fi wise I mean with the captin of Das Boot and the future Captin of the Enterprise .... and Uhmmm Sting ... how could you go wrong :D - ramble ramble etc ...
Bakula wasn't in it IIRC, but his Quantam Leap Buddy, Dean Stockwell, was.

Patrick Stewart played Gurney Hallek in the original movie.

As SB pointed out was refering to Enterprise D in TNG not Enterprise ... lol .. sorry my bad for not being clearer Eah ..
Actually thinking of ENTERPRISE I sorta hoped and joked before the show initial aired was that they would some how involve Dean Stockwell or ziggy referances in the show ... "AL" could have been the first officer and the computer could have had the voice of "ZIGGY" - lol ... would have thought it was "cute" for about 10 minutes ... sad that the reality of somethings would probaly ... deminish the whole experience ... kinda like by the grace of the gods "land" someone on your drool list to only find out that they have or do "things" that ruin the whole fantasy ... oh vell ...

I really enjoyed the Sci Fi Channel Dune and Children of Dune mini-series. Much closer to the books than that Lynch piece of crap. Special effects were a bit off in some parts, but the story still held together and was done well in my opinion.

I preferred MR. DAVID LYNCH'S version of the story, insofar as compelling storytelling. I thought it was cast better, all across the board.
The first miniseries, aside from its production values, left me asking, "Why should I care?" Also, the secondary characters, such as that woman with the Spice Blue eyes, were far more compelling to me, & I wanted to know more about them.
I have not seen the 2nd miniseries, nor have I read any of the various novels, so I am able to enjoy the stories presented without bias, since I have not become attached to the works of MR. FRANK HERBERT or his progeny.

oh arnisador I have to agree with SB & MALCOLM I also enjoyed DAVID LYNCH'S version. In fact my hardest part with watching the mini series was getting over the DAVID LYNCH'S version and and seperating the two - when I watched the DVD of the mini series I waas able to get into it more and alsoo got over the seperation issues of the two projects. I have not read the DUNE books - but even when I watch a movie based on a book I have read - I can except changes because sometimes a good book will not make a good movie unless you make changes .... but I am rambling ... oh if we get to that resturant at the end of the universe... make sure to tip the parking lot attendent .... ;)
