Bryan and I decided to take a break from our parental responsibilities and went to Novi, Michigan for the Motor City Comic Con this weekend. We had a great time! The guests weren't as abundant as their May Con but there were enough guests that we wanted to see to make it worth the drive down there.

Since I wasn't able to see Walter Koenig at Trek, because we had Colin with us, I was thrilled to meet him, get my photo with him, get an autograph and hear his guest talk. :D

I loved seeing Richard Hatch (from BattleStar) again. (He'd been to Trek years ago). He was quite "chatty" with all of the fans and was also willing to pose for pictures. He was so sweet.

We got our Next Gen video of Deja Q signed by Corbin Bernsen...that was neat! :D

We got a pic from Larry Thomas (aka the Soup Nazi)...and yes he wrote "No soup for you" on it! LOL!

We met June Lockhart for Lost in Space...very nice lady. Bryan got his pic with her.

We met Maud Adams (Bond movies) and Bryan got his pic with her too.

We met Anson Williams (Potsie from Happy Days) and I got a pic with him. He was a fun guest to meet.

We met Bill Morrison (from Simpsons comics)....a really nice guy!

They had a decent sized dealers area too.

Michigan has already announced guests for May including Brent Spiner (Data from Next Gen), Daisy Duke (from the Original Dukes of Hazard), Donny Most (Ralph Malph from Happy Days) and David Caradine from Kung Fu the Legend Continues. They will have a ton more guests but we are excited about Brent Spiner coming! I missed him when he came to Toronto to SFX a few years back. Now I can get my pic signed by him that has Data as Sherlock Holmes, Moriarty and Geordi as Dr. Watson. It was originally autographed by Daniel Davis (Moriarty) and was recently signed by Levar Burton (Geordi as Dr. Watson). It will be so cool if I can get it completed!

Motor City Convention in Novi, MI is well run and quite a bit of fun!!

Can't wait until May 2005 and we will go back and see Brent Spiner (DATA from TNG).

It is great to be able to get pictures with the stars (and not having to pay for them!), basically no line-ups for autographs (each star was $20 US per autograph) and hearing Walter Koenig speak was good fun (he gave no details but Walter did say that he thinks William shatner is not a nice person at all - apparently something happened at James Doohan's last convention in LA a few weeks ago and William Shatner pulled a "no class move" and Walter Koenig was saying that unfortunately he will have to "go to his grave" with no respect for Mr. Shatner".

Looks like Motor City Convention goes on the "must attend" convention list!! ;)

It is kinda funny the way that Motor City runs their convention...it differs slightly from the TT and even the SFX model, especially the way they handle guests/attendees.

There is no "Security Team", not really any "volunteers" noticeable within the autograph area and there are anywhere from 6-15 guests there at anytime. People sort the lines themselves and I have yet to see any issues or disagreements. There is the odd Staff member around that can answer questions/direct you but they definitely do not stand out.

When the guests speak, I have seen a few there at Motor City, they generally just wander to the room themselves and the talks begin - very informal and with little fanfare/escort (surprises me a bit considering this is very near Detroit but the attendees are real courteous). Now granted after the guest is done talking one of the staff escorts them back to their table but the level of oranization and ease is quite refreshing.

I understand some of the "need" for security at cons but in a lot of the cases the "volunteer security" do it for the "power trip" at a con.

**NOTE: There are people like Sid who take Security seriously and from my personal dealings treat it with professionalism and pretty well like a job and don't go looking to make trouble but some at the Toronto conventions are ...and I will be p.c. here "a real treat".

After attending a lot of the US conventions, I am starting to re-think the "must attend conventions" for me!!

I am a big fan of Motor City convention and they are bringing in some great guests - both sci-fi and classic TV/Movie actors and actresses.

If you get the chance you should definitely check them out. ;)

I work just down the road from Novi Mi.

I live north of it, yet hang out in Rochester or Ann Arbor or Pontiac, or even Flint which is closer to where I live.

So, what I am saying, is that those who are out this way, drop me a line and maybe if I am in town we can meet and or chat or enjoy an event :) or after hours hanging out.
