View Full Version : Motor City Convention - May 12-15 2005
shopping queen 10-20-2004, 10:30 AM When I learned that Brent Spiner was scheduled to come to Motor City Convention in May 2005, you can bet that I was one excited fangirl!!!
So far they only have a few guests scheduled which include....
Catherine Bach (Daisy from Dukes of Hazzard)
David Carradine (Kung Fu & Kill Bill)
Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters & Oz)
Donnie Most (Happy Days)
Kim Richards (Witch Mountain)
Also a bunch of comic creators!
I know that they will easily have another 10 - 15 guests. I am counting the days to Michigan!
Anyone else think that they will try to attend????
Bryan R 10-20-2004, 12:34 PM Let me add for anyone contemplating going to this convention.
It takes approximately 3hrs 45 minutes - 4 hours to drive there to NOVI, MI.
If you collect autographs and you do not mind paying the going rate of $20 USD per autograph, it is second to none as generally the longest I have waited for any autograph there is about 10 minutes.
I have heard some of the guests speak and generally you can easily get yourself in the first half-dozen rows.
Generally the hotel prices run around $54 - $75 USD per night (and they are pretty nice). Parking is $5 USD at the convention.
I am looking forward to May!!
ShadowRunner 10-20-2004, 05:41 PM I live in South East Michigan, so if anyone shows up or would like to know where to check out, or where to avoid ;) let me know.
shopping queen 11-09-2004, 04:08 PM We'll be there FOR SURE....just not sure if we'll be going Friday overnight to Saturday or Saturday overnight to Sunday. We're certainly open to the idea of meeting up with others at the convention or afterwards...if we can stay on Saturday night.

You got that righ Bryan. I agree with you 100% that Michigan is the place to go for autographs. Remember that one CON we went to a couple of years ago? And it was so bad that i suggested we go to Michigan.....see I knew the Michigan CON's would be awesome.

OK - keep rubbing it in bud!! You were ABSOLUTELY right, we should have gone to Michigan from the "con-wannabe" we went to instead.
I think I got it now...Listen to T.J....Listen to T.J....Listen to T.J....Listen to T.J... :D ;)

Bryan R 12-30-2004, 03:00 PM For anyone interested, we usually stay overnight at the Wyndam Gardens hotel in Novi (right down the road from Convention). Cost is about $60 US per night and the hotel is quite nice and has restuarants right across the road TGIF, Olive Garden and others!
Hope to see lots of our friends at Motor City, MI in May!!

I'll definately be staying overnight...not sure which night though. Like Bryan and Jackie said, it'll either be Friday night if I go down for Friday and Saturday, or Saturday night if I go down for Saturday and Sunday.
I hope to see you guys there.

Yes, T.J. was right....we ALL should have headed to Michigan for Motor City instead of going to "Crapthulhu". Actually, if it hadn't been for Kyle then I would have tried to go down with 'Moose and his gang as I know they were heading down for it. I remember wanting to see Connor Trinneer that year. We have learned our lesson....we realize the "GREATNESS" of Motor City Cons especially the ease in obtaining autographs in a short amount of time and the relaxed atmosphere. FOR SURE we will be there and it should be a GREAT weekend!

Amen to that!!
Bryan R 01-02-2005, 11:54 AM Motor City MI has become a "staple convention", one that Jackie and I plan on attending (and budgeting for).
If you are looking to meet guests (Sci-Fi, Classic TV, Wrestlers, XXX Models, and more) and want to see a huge dealer's room, get your pics taken with the stars, hear guests talk then Motor City is for you!! :)
Silent Bob 01-02-2005, 12:09 PM XXX stars? So, that would make Traci Lords what, a super star since she's done porn, scifi and music?

LOL @ SB!!
Actually I cannot say I know any of the XXX stars/models that have been at Motor City but their line-ups for autographs and to have pictures taken with them is busy most of the day!!
Of course them wearing next to nothing and in their CFM shoes I am sure contributes to the long lines!! ;)
As for Traci Lords, hey I give her credit for building the career she has, bet that was not easy!! Wonder is she can sing and act (naked) in the same show?!! ;)

Hey T.J., we knew that YOU would be excited to see NANA's name on the guest list. You'll have to come up with some NEW poses for MORE pics with her. I'm also not at all surprised that you would want to bring your pics from Trek to get her to autograph them.
"ROAD TRIP!"....."MOTOR CITY HERE WE COME!!!!"
Bryan R 02-04-2005, 10:34 AM This is how a convention generates "buzz"...announcing guests and especially some BNG's like Brent Spiner and Robert Beltran and Elvira ;) (Hey wouldn't she be a better fit at their October con being it is closer to Halloween?).
And knowing the way Motor City operates, there should be about an additional 10 guests still to be announced!! This is a MUST ATTEND for you autograph hounds out there or if you want to have your picture taken with any of the announced guests (and generally it is FREE to have your pic taken with the guest - on a rare occassion a guest might charge $1 for charity to have your picture taken. Julie Benz - Darla from Angel did this).
Jackie and I are definites on this one!! I know T.J. will be going, have to hear from John (primetime21) and I am wondering if this guest list will draw our pal Ken to Motor City, MI!!? ;) Anyone else that wants to come, we will be there and after the con dinner and a movie is always an option!!

Also, how many rolls of film do you figure you'll use up this time???? Just curious so if you are going to be a while taking pics then can Bryan and I be in front of you in line.....ROTFL!!!!

Don't worry about it, we're all gonna have tons of fun. And yes, i'll probably be enlarging some of the pics with Nana.....especially the one of her in my arms...love that pic.
I won't be taking many pics with her again.....maybe a group shot with all of us would be cool with Nana Visitor and Robert Beltran :P

Bryan hey I was wondering is this con more like TT or SFX these are the only con's I have been to. I love when the guest talk at both and I was wondering if they do that at Motor City?
The guest list is great.
I love TT but like Silent Bob says we have to know who the guest are so we can book holidays and TT should at least have 1 guest by now, I think?? :(
This is the main reason my friends don't really like TT--IMO
SFX tells you pretty much on 1 day who all the guest will be and it's very easy to decide if you want to go.
Thanks in advance for the information on Motor City
I think I may make the trip down the 401
<first post please be kind--lol>

Of course I will be kind! ;)
Welcome to the "Convention Part" of Silent Bob's board.
I would be happy to answer your questions on Motor City!
It is much more like SFX than TT as far as "style of convention". You will pay for ALL your autographs BUT the longest line for an autograph in the last 2 years was about 10-15 minutes (Ron Perlman from Hellboy and Gates McFadden from ST-TNG). All the guests sit at their own table and you just walk up and get the autograph you are wanting.
Also you can have your picture taken with the guests for free (only person I have had to pay for a picture with is Julie Benz and that was a $1 donation to her foundation for charity - I gladly gave $3).
Motor City has guest talks, actually Jackie and I sat in the front row for Walter Koenig's talk in October at Motor City (they put on 2 conventions - a BIG one in May and a slightly smaller one in October). There is no line-ups and you just walk in and hear the guests talk.
The dealer''s room is massive!! Probably 3-5 times the size of SFX's dealer room and there are some comic artists etc there if you are into comic books!
There are no panels or masquerade like TT so if you are into a HUGE Dealer's room, Autographs, Guest Talks and Pictures with the stars then Motor City is perfect for you (btw: they will probably announce another 10 guests before May too!). If you want Panels, Art Room, Masquerade and Video room then Motor City is not for you and you are better off at TT19.
It will take you about 3.5-4 hours to drive to Motor City, not bad at all and if you are staying overnight I highly recommend the Novi Wyndam Gardens (about $70 US/night), the rooms are big enough, clean and right near T.G.I.F. and Olive garden for dinner.
Hope this helps!!
Any more questions please ask!!

I know that you directed this question to Bryan but figured that I would give you my 2 cents worth. I would compare it more to SFX only because there is a minimal fee to get in the doors, the guests are available for the majority of the day to sign autographs (for an additional fee approximately $10 to $40 US for most) and some are also scheduled for guest talks throughout the day. There is a large dealers area where you can find merchandise that often is not available in Canada. There are Anime Events also taking place throughout the day but we've never attended any of these events. The best way that I could describe it would be that it's a laid-back atmosphere. It's super easy to get autographs, you can chat with the guests without fear that security will drag you away and most of the guests will also allow you to take a picture with them. At past May events, there has been a dance scheduled for the Saturday evening at one of the area hotels. It's a fun event that we have decided is a priority event to attend because of their extensive guest lists and ease for obtaining autographs.
If only we had listened to T.J. earlier....the fun that we missed out on!!!!

Motor City over the past few years has been able to produce an impressive list of guests....from a variety of shows. This is one thing that really appeals to me. They get guests from "old time favourite shows" like Happy Days, Fresh Prince, Charlie's Angels, Love Boat, etc.; popular sci-fi shows/movies such as Babylon 5, Trek (any series), Star Wars; Horror movies/shows; Fantasy/Action-Adventure such as Xena, Buffy, Angel, etc. If they continue to offer an interesting guest list, an impressive dealer room and guest talks then it will be a MUST ATTEND convention each year.

Bryan R 02-09-2005, 02:10 PM One thing with Motor City as well, they have an awesome amount of Comic Book artists/pencillers, etc.
They have a lot of Comic Book dealers there as well so if that is one of your interests you will not be disappointed.
They also generally have some Playboy Playmates and other variety of guests (In October they had Miss Teen Michigan there too!)...not that I noticed her mind you.... ;)

Motor City also has one of the largest groups of Autograph Dealers that I have ever seen. Definately one of the areas I always look into when I got to this CON!!
Bryan R 02-10-2005, 03:15 PM A few tidbits of information for Motor City, MI con as well.
1) There is a small cafeteria in the convention centre where you can get sandwiches, pizza, hot dogs, pop, juice, chocolate milk and the like. It is a little pricey but not quite at "gouge level".
2) Parking at the Convention Centre is $5 USD
3) There are a couple of tolls you will have to pay on your travel down to Michigan, it is convenient if you have some US change or small US bills with you.
Bryan R 02-20-2005, 09:07 AM Motor City has added some more guests!! A Stargate SG-1 guest along with an X-Files guest and some guests from the Horror genre!!
Gary Jones - Stargate SG-1
Tom Braidwood - X-Files and The Lone Gunman
The Ghoul - Legendary late night horror movie host
Tom Savini - Dawn of The Dead and special effects artist
Tom Sullivan - Special Effects on Army of Darkness

Guests?? At a con??
And is it no wonder that Motor City, MI is so popular for the autograph hounds to see their favourite Sci-Fi guests, Classic TV and Specialty guests!! :)
And at Motor City, they have a huge and awesome Dealer's area along with their numerous Comic Book guests/artists/pencillers, etc.
All they need now is either a Star Wars or Buffy/Angel guest and it would be complete for me (although who they have announced already is more than enough for me and Jackie!!). I am not sure I could afford even more autographs!! ;)

I feel the same way.
Bryan R 02-23-2005, 02:51 PM I went to their site today and purchsed (2x) 3 Day tickets via Paypal.
Can't hardly wait for Motor City, MI :)
Motor City has announced a few more guests to their May line-up. But, DUE TO FILMING OBLIGATIONS..David Carradine will not be attending.
Dammit....I would love to have met him....oh well....the line up for May is still awesome.
Silent Bob 03-07-2005, 11:54 PM Well, cross your fingers. He may be drunk that day and show up anyway. :D
Bryan R 03-08-2005, 03:21 PM Well a couple of neat additions to the Guest List at Motor City, MI
1) Dirk Benedict - Battlestar Galactica
2) Jason Carter - Babylon 5
3) Hayley Mills - I think she was in Saved By The Bell (a teacher at the beginnning although I could be wrong).
4) Mary Oyaya - Star Wars Episode 2 and 3
5) Hacksaw Jim Duggan - Wrestling favourite with the 2x4
I thought Hayley Mills was the original parent trap, along with a slew of other disney films in the 60's.
I dont recall her being on Saved by the Bell o_O
Bryan R 03-08-2005, 05:30 PM Took me a bit but I am NOT losing my mind Hayley Mills was in the first 13 Episodes of Saved by the Bell.
http://www.seedship.com/hayley/

Now I canot disagree with that!! ;)
I guess that means if you were in a show that starred "Screech Powers" that isn't "career building"!! :D
Bryan R 03-09-2005, 11:35 AM The way Motor City, MI continues to add more guests, man I am goig to need to take out a loan" to get all the autographs I want.
Adding Dirk Benedict from Battlestar Galactica and Jason Carter from Babylon 5 were awesome additions and make it an even more attractive con for me personally!
"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan is a neat addition and I am betting he is a really nice guy - might have to have my pic taken with the "2x4 guy"!! ;)
Silent Bob 03-09-2005, 01:42 PM I've heard alot of goot things about Jim the last 20 years. Supposed to really appreciate his fans.
The addition of DIRK BENEDICT is amazing...I can't wait till May.

Yes, I was quite excited to hear about Dirk Benedict (Battlestar), Jason Carter (B5) and Mary Oyaya (SW Ep 2 & 3) being added to the already impressive guest list. Thank goodness we're driving to the convention so that we can load the car to the max with all the sh....I mean, stuff that we plan to bring. LOL!

See what kind of "buzz" announcing guests brings!!
Motor City has guests from the following shows:
Star Trek TNG (Brent Spiner, Dwight Schultz)
Star Trek Voyager (Robert Beltran)
Star Trek DS9 (Nana Visitor)
Star Trek Enterprise (Jeffrey Coombs - Shraan)
Battlestar Galactica Original (Dirk Benedict)
Star Wars Ep 2 & 3 (Mary Oyaya)
Babylon 5 (Jason Carter)
Stargate SG-1 (Gary Jones)
X-Files (Tom Braidwood)
and many many more!
This is the knid of buzz/advertising that a con needs to attract attendees and more importantly (NEW attendees!).
Motor City has also learned that having some ecclectic/different genre of guests to attract other people.
Elvira
Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Hayley Mills
This is gonna be a great con!! :)
Bryan R 03-10-2005, 02:59 PM CAN YOU BELIEVE IT - Motor City, MI added even MORE guests (2 more)!!

shopping queen 04-20-2005, 08:42 AM Some bad news from Motor City.....
Brent Spiner - It is with regrets that the Motor City Comic Con must announce the cancellation of Brent Spiner as a guest of our convention. Mr. Spiner has recently been hired to co-star with Hillary Duff in her new movie Material Girl and its filming schedule has been rescheduled and now falls on the weekend of our show. Mr. Spiner plans on attending a future Motor City Comic Con and apologizes to his many fans for their disappointment and his. He was looking forward to spending three fun filled days at the con and meeting his many Star Trek fans. He hopes you will still attend the show and meet the other great Star Trek cast members on hand just the same.
Out of any cancellation that could have happened, this one disappointed me the most. I've been wanting to get Brent Spiner's autograph on a Sonia Hillios print of Data as Sherlock Holmes for a long time. It's already been signed by LeVar Burton as Watson (at SFX) and by Daniel Davis who played Moriarty (on Seatrek '93). It would have been AWESOME to get it completed. I guess I'll have to wait a while longer!
Fingers crossed that no one else has to cancel...but at least their guest list is so jam-packed that it will free up some money that I would have spent on Brent Spiner as well as some time from waiting in his long autograph line...LOL!
Bryan R 04-20-2005, 10:07 AM Very disappointing that Brent Spiner will not be at Motor City this May. :(
Especially to be in a Hilary Duff movie (YEUCH!!!!!!!!!!)
But having Robert Beltran, Dwight Schultz, Jeffrey Combs and Nana Visitor along with a couple I want to meet in Robert Culp, Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) and Hacksaw Jim Duggan there are more than enough guests to keep me happy!! ;)

Well at least Spiner is cancelling because he is Co-starring in the movie and not because of some bit part. I can't blame any actor for taking on a job assignment verses going to a convention. I will keep my fingers crossed that he makes it to another convention within travel distance so that I can see him.
Bryan R 05-05-2005, 10:01 AM Motor City has had a few cancellations and a few additions for next week's convention!
Cancellations:
Robert Culp - Do to personal matters beyond his control, Mr. Culp must sadly cancel his appearance at the Motor City Comic Con.
Hayley Mills - Fo those who may not have heard Mrs. Mills lost her father a week ago Sir John Mills. She sadly must cancel her appearance to the Motor City Comic Con due to all the family arrangements with the funeral and such. We at the Motor City Comic Con send our thoughts out to her and her family in their loss.
Tom Savini - Tom is working on a special project with George Ramero and will be in California working on said project and must bow out from attending what he calls "His favorite show on the circuit, considering that this show has the best fans he has ever met." Tom plans on once again attending the Motor City Comic Con next May.
Ernie Hudson - Mr. Hudson has just gotten a part in a movie for the Lifetime Channel called "No More Victims" and will be having to film in Calghery the week of our show. He looks forward to attending our convention either in the fall or next spring.
Additions to the Guest List:
Anne Lockhart - Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Troll, Jag and Dark Tower
Kane Hodder - Jason from Friday The 13th
Lori Lust - Award winning Fitness Model and Playboy model
I love the addition of Anne Lockhart personally!! ;)
Bryan R 05-05-2005, 02:08 PM Unfortunately another cancellation for Motor City, dropping like flies!
I can totally see what SFX/Toronto Trek have to deal with regarding guests!
Elvira
I just received notification from Cassandra Peterson's (ELVIRA) management stating that she will be unable to attend Motor City Con due to a film commitment that came up. Here is what they said:
"We signed a deal last week for the next Elvira feature, and the studio, which is fast tracking production so it can be ready for Halloween, informed us yesterday that they have set up director meetings for Cassandra from mid next week though the weekend as they need to start preproduction on the 17th."
I feel very bad that we have lost Ernie and Cassandra for your fine show. This is beyond my control.

Last convention in Vulkon Cleveland - Richard Hatch (Apollo) and Herb Jefferson Jr (Boomer)
Motor City 4 weeks later - Dirk Benedict (Starbuck) and Anne Lockhart (Sheba).
Love those Classic Battlestar guests!! :)
Bryan R 05-10-2005, 08:51 PM More changes for Motor City this weekend!!

Motor City has been cursed with bad luck this year but I give them HUGE credit for getting replacement guests on such short notice. We only saw the changes on their website last night that Nana Visitor would not be attending but at the same time they announce that Marina Sirtis would be coming! Despite not being "impressed" with her many, many years ago at Trek, I am looking forward to seeing her again. Since Trek, I have heard so many wonderful things about Marina, especially from fellow STNG actors. Despite the changes, I'm very excited still to be going to this convention...just a few more sleeps now!!!
Bryan R 05-11-2005, 11:16 AM Man, it must drive con-organizers crazy with last-minute cancellations by guests. I can imagine the scramble this causes for a convention and especially if it is a "headliner" guest. (or BNG guest if you like that terminology better). ;)
Personally for me I much prefer seeing Marina Sirtis to Nana Visitor only because Nana was just at Toronto Trek where I saw her a year or two ago, it has been many many years since I saw Marina Sirtis!!

Just think of all of the pre-printed materials such as programme booklets and speaking schedules that will be totally wrong as a result of all of the changes. Again, I give them credit for keeping their website updated with the latest information and getting replacement guests on such short notice.
Bryan R 05-16-2005, 09:47 AM Jackie and I have now returned from our weekend down at Motor City, MI and again it was a great and well run show!!
I picked up autographs from Dirk Benedict, Marina Sirtis, Robert Beltran, Jeffrey Combs, Dwight Schultz, Mary Oyaya, Anne Lockhart, Patrick Kilpatrick, Jason Carter and a few others. The WHOLE autograph collection time was about 1.5 hours (and that was to get over 20 autographs) as well as pictures from the guests as well - awesome way to run the autograph/picture stuff! :)
Jackie had her picture taken with Dwight Schultz and Dirk Benedict in front of the A-Team van!! :)
We sat in on the talks by Mary Oyaya, Robert Beltran and the one with Dwight/Dirk together (they were an absolute hoot on stage together).
The dealer's room in one word - MASSIVE!! I could have spent a fortune in there and the diversity of stuff was incredible!!
If you are a huge Comic fa, this convention had well over 75 artists/pencillers/writers etc!
There was also a section with Playboy Playmates/Models, etc for the "fanbois" who like this stuff! ;)
I highly recommend Motor City if you want autographs (with little/no lineup) as well as wanting your picture with the stars!

Jackie and I have now returned from our weekend down at Motor City, MI and again it was a great and well run show!!
We had a GREAT time down in Michigan for the Motor City Comic Con.
It's AMAZING how easy that make it to obtain an autograph from your favourite actor. By going on Friday, not only did we get in 1/2 hour early (because of prebuying our tickets, but we also were able to see many of the guests before the show officially started! It sure beats many other cons where the guests are only available to sign for a limited period of time and you are forced to wait in long lineups for hours. By being available ALL DAY, the lines were never out of control.
It was such fun getting my picture taken with Dirk Benedict and Dwight Schultz in front of the A-Team van. Although I vaguely remember the A-Team...I was rather young when it first aired...I was more interested in both guests for other work they have done. This was a rare opportunity to see the A-Team van up close and pose with 2 of the actors from that series....something that I wanted to remember.
It's also so easy to get pics with the various actors...often they will allow you to pose for a pic with them even if you don't get an autograph...some charge a small fee (often the money is donated to a charity). We got some GREAT pics with the various guests! It was great to see Mary Oyaya (Luminara from Ep 3) and Nutopia (her agent we met at Vulkon Cleveland and she is also a model and was pictured on the cover of the program booklet). We were able to chat with them about the previous convention where we saw them as well as about events leading up to Motor City. The experience was a lot more personal as a result.
The dealer's room was INCREDIBLE!!!! So much variety and some unique items too. I was SO tempted to purchase an R2D2 cooler that I saw at one of the booths. If it hadn't been purchased by someone else while we were at the guest talks then I probably would have left with it. In a way, perhaps it was fate that I didn't bring it home....but if I saw one again at a future convention, I might not pass it by a second time. It was so neat!! The same booth had a large Watto (from Episode 1) and they had it suspended in the air so it looked as if it was flying. There was a large-sized Yoda too....it looked so real that it freaked me out. I kept feeling like it was looking at me! LOL! Other neat things were glowing lightsabers and a shadow box of Lord of the Rings items including Elijah Woods' autograph. I had no problem spending hours wandering through the various booths in the dealers room and had no trouble spending my money either!! LOL!
Not only did we enjoy the show but we also ventured around the area to see what other things were close by...something we had not done before. There is a large shopping mall (Twelve Oaks) just minutes from the convention centre. Across the road at Novi Rd and Twelve Mile Rd) is a HUGE complex of stores, restaurants and entertainment. We were able to enjoy dinner and a movie (too bad the new Star Wars movie had not yet been released) on Saturday after the convention. It's great that so many things are located so conveniently.
All-in-all a GREAT weekend...can't wait to see what they plan for May 2006!
