I'm curious what you thought about this last episode of BSG with the boxing match between Kara and Lee or Kara and Hot Dog. Was it utterly rediculous or any credibility in the idea a woman of her size/strength/ability could hold her own against a man of their size, etc. ? Since there are so many Martial Arts experts here I thought it the best place to ask. :D

I haven't watch it yet, I am 2 weeks behind, so can only give an informed opinion later, but just in general in MA, it is known that size doesn't matter, skill is more important

I wasn't into that show. I had it on; but, it wasn't holding my attention. :(

But boxing in general I would say no. Open martial arts in a streat fight it would be much more even or decided on ability not pure strength.

To be fair, neither Lee nor Hot Dog is a huge hulk of a man. So, the size differential isn't as big as it would be if Kara were teeny-tiny or Lee & Hot Dog were musclebound six footers.

And who ever told you that size doesn't matter was lying... oh, wait, you meant in martial arts... ;) :D

Well, I dont follow the show regularly, but the last few I saw Lee was big, sloppy and fat... so unless he cleaned his act up, I wouldnt be supprised if Starbuck kicked his ass.

Due to the amazing jump rope diet he is no longer a fat ass.

See I actually thought that was a great thing. Kara is pretty strong in her own way, and determination can go far. She also knows their weaknesses so that may make it easier for her to kickbutt.

Missed the ep as i was working and kept forgetting to tape it. :(

That said, in a straight boxing match, I don't believe a woman of Starbucks size could stand toe-to-toe against a man of Apollo's size. Typically, the male can absorb and cause more damage than the female.

Now, in a fight, not under boxing rules, it's possible. There are arts (wing chun comes to mind) that are aimed more towards allowing a smaller person to deal effectively with a larger one. You would see locks, speed, and use of the size difference in the females favor in that fight.

Now, regarding the ep, here's a possibility:
Lee dieted heavily to drop the pounds, so he's a little underfed and weak, while Kara caught up on her eating so she had the stores to outlast in a fight. It's a subtle thing, but if Lee was 10% under top condition, and she was 10% over (add in pissed off, whatever to the boost), then that 20% difference in ability/stamina/resources could certainly make a significant difference. A simple "he wasn't hitting as hard as he normally could, and she seemed to be swinging rocks" makes all the difference in the world.

So, in the end, it comes down to who wants it more, and who has the ability to absorb and dish it out.

She used some completely non-regulation moves, too, such as dropping down & kicking his legs out from under him. It was definitely not a straight boxing match.

That would work :)

Women tend to be more flexible than men, and a bit faster too.

What Bob said, but let me add coming from a primarily hand striking oriented background... who gets its in & means it, generally wins. Gross disparities in body sizes not withstanding, generally speaking the first intended shot determines the outcome when thrown.

Ok I have posted the entire show from youtube on another thread but for the purposes of this discussion so that we can discuss it without having to watch the whole show this is the specific link to their fight. It is a little interspersed with other scenes. Have a look and tell me what you think.

He did some other stuff too like grabing her around the neck and choking her. Which oddly I didn't notice the first time I watched it.

I think that the flashbacks help to show their emotions. The emotions themselves could have been driving the two of them.

I agree on the emotions being a factor...If Im in a sparring match and get angry, Ill keep it up....unless I manage to cool down or get sat on, whichever comes first.

A guy knocked a concussion into me, and I still kept going after him ... :x

My platoon initiation when I was in Panama was to see how long it took a bunch of the guys to handcuff you. I was the only female & I had the record. Partly because I had a lot more to prove & had to fight harder for it as a woman in a combat support MP unit, but also because the guys were worried about what they were grabbing ;) and I wasn't. :D

I loved this episode!
At first I thought I wouldn't like it, after all "Fight Club meets Galacitca" doesn't sound very appealing but it was pretty good.
My favorite part though, is when that Viper tech comes up to cheif and tells him that gyro was messed up and Chief blew him off, then blew off Adama when he mentioned the broken bird, then Adama procedes to whoop Chiefs ass (for awhile anyways) but that first punch was awesome.
I have also completly given up on Starbuck at this point too, nothing she can do now can redeem her character to me, granted Lee was in the wrong too but at this point they just need to kill her off.

Aww.....don't give up on Starbuck! I like her and the battle within herself she is fighting

And I LOVED the fight with the Chief and Adama!!!

Nope, she's a ***** for stomping all over Lee's heart like that, then going off and getting hitched with Anders.
Then the way she has been treating Anders lately is just as bad if not worse. I think it would be great if finally she gets her act together and goes and tries to patch things up with Anders only to find he doesn't want to put up with her crap anymore.

I think she is just a coward...
