Presently I'm reading "Gifts" by Ursual K. LeGuin

On the back cover:

"You don't use the Gift. It uses you."
Scattered among desolate farms, the families of the Uplands are poor, but they possess priceless gifts. Some have the wondrous ability - with a glance, a gesture, a word - to summon animals, bring forth fire, or move the land. Some have the fearsome power to twist a limb, chain a mind, or inflict a wasting illness. The Uplanders live in constant dread that one family might unleash its gift against another.
But young Orrec's gift is a wild, uncontrollable one. Horrified by the possibility that he could unintentionally kill the ones he loves by simply looking at them, Orrec blindfolds his eyes. His childhood friend, Gry, helps him navigate through the strange new darkness. And she, too, rejects her gift by refusing to call animals to the hunt.
Can these two outcasts, useless i a place were fit s are everything find purpose in the world?

I've been doing more writing than reading lately, but at the moment, I'm dividing my time between Trek novels and Clive Cussler novels.

I've just started reading one of my old Star Trek:TNG novels again- Dark Mirror by Diane Duane.
It is a TNG follow up to the classic TOS episode Mirror Mirror.(it was writen years before the Mirror Universe episodes of DS9 & ENT) Like most Trek novels, it is an easy and enjoyable read if you are a fan of the show.

Oooh! Dark Mirror was good! I just got all my old TOS Star Trek novels out of storage and am hoping to reread some of my favorites again when I get a chance.

I am about a quarter of the way through the final book in Neal Stephenson's Baroque trilogy. This one is called "The System of the World" and so far I can say that Book 1 was good, Book 2 was really incredible and Book 3 may be the best so far. But, they are quite an investment in time & brain power, not light reading!

I finished that new Terry Brooks book this weekend "Armageddon's Children" and enjoyed it quite a bit. I think one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much is that he has managed to tie the Shannara world into the world of the Knights of the Word & I never expected him to do that.

It explains so much about how the Shannara world is so much like ours, only with magic. I didn't realize when I got it from the library that the series was actually called "The Genesis of Shannara" so I was pleasantly surprised about that. I can't wait to get my hands on Book 2, which is due out in August of this year!

I'm reading a couple of Warhammer 40K books, the newest Ravenor book (Ravenor Rouge) and a Commissar Cain book. I haven't played 40K in years but I still like the fiction.
After that I have a book called "Guests of the Ayatollah" by Mark Bowden, he wrote "Black Hawk Down" which is one of my favorite military books.

I just picked up "The Ultramarines Omnibus" which contains three novels about the Ultramarine Chapter of the Space Marines from the world of Warhammer 40k.

I dont usually read game novels anymore, I find that 80% or so are poorly written tripe, but I was looking for somthing BIG and cheap, and this qualified on both counts, at almost 800 pages for 10 bucks... and so far its not that bad.

That book series is alright.
In 40K anything by Dan Abnet is worth reading (the Eisenhorn trilogy/omnibus and the ongoing Gaunts Ghosts) series are my favorites from him and I'm reading the last book in the Ravenor series by him as well.
They also started publishing the Horus Heresy series recently and so far it is pretty good (the first 3 books were a trilogy but written by different authors, Abnet, the guy who wrote your Ultramarine books and a guy who is good at writing descriptions of Chaos).
GW's only other decent writer is named Sandy Mitchell who has the ongoing Commissar Cain series (the first 3 books and 2 or 3 short stories are now in an Omnibus), I like this series a lot, it is written as a memior of one of the heroes of the Imperium but he writes himself as a fraud.

I just finished James Patterson's "6th Target". It was very good. I am currently re-reading some old Johanna Lindsey books. I have read about 4 in the last three days. I also finished Laurell K. I just started reading the first four books of Kate Elliott's "Crown of Stars" series again. I read them a few years ago, but the last 3 books weren't out yet. Now that they are (and they got delivered from Amazon yesterday) I needed to read the first four again before I read the last three. I love lengthy sword & sorcery books with well-developed characters, so these books are right up my alley.

I read them a few years ago, but the last 3 books weren't out yet.

Talking about that... I recall reading a series of books when I was in my early 20's by Stephen Brust, and I recently saw that there are several more availible now... and the ones I read availible as a combined Trade Paperback called "The Book Of Jhereg"... I was considering picking it up and re-reading it, but my tastes back then were a lot looser than they are now... anyone read this series, and was it as good as I remember it?

(And for those of you who have not read it the stories are somthing like this...)

The world is controled, populated and ruled by elven familes... humans are a scarce minority looked down upon by the elven population. The books were about a Human assassin who dabbled in witchcraft (which was IIRC a forbidden type of magic) who used its powers to bond with the egg of a Jhereg, which is like a small poisonous psychic flying lizard, and him and the Jhereg do... ummm, stuff... (hey its been a long time, don't ask me to remember what that stuff was, if I could, I wouldnt need to re read it)

Cryozombie - I haven't heard of that series, but I will look into it, it sounds intriguing.

Has anyone read any of Anthony Swofford's books? He is the ex-Marine who wrote "Jarhead" (http://www.amazon.com/Jarhead-Marines-Chronicle-Other-Battles/dp/0743287215/ref=sr_1_7/103-9387303-4278215?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1183386291&sr=1-7) and I just watched the movie this weekend and thought I would give the book a try.

The movie brought back all sorts of memories for me. I joined the Army during Operation Desert Shield but didn't graduate from MP school until after Desert Storm was over, so I was sent to Panama instead. I had a lot of friends who came back forever changed by their experiences during Desert Shield & Storm and even though the movie took some liberties, most of it was spot-on. A very gritty but honest look at what happens in situations like that (or so I thought).
