When I was in a comic book store recently I noticed there seemed to be several different X-Men comic series and I soon became overwhelmed!
What series is generally considered the best? Or which one would be a good one to start with? Any advice?

Oh dear, that may be almost like asking BSG fans which is better, TOS or nuBSG! lol

No kidding... There's (last I checked & best I remember) at least 2, maybe 3 different X-Men named series. Just checked the Marvel Unverse site. There's now ... "The Uncanny", "The Ultimate", "Astonishing", "X-Men", "First Class", "New X-Men".

Then there's the spin off(s) (X-Factor, Exiles, X-23).

Wolverine also has his own thing happening as well, now so does Storm.

As I recall, "Uncanny" is the oldest title currently in print (Logically "X-men" should be, but the current series under that name isn't the same volume -- publication -- as the original). Not that it means anything.

What it would most depend is your favourite style of storytelling, and which writer most fits that style.

Sample them all, then pick out your fave and see who the writer is.

In comics, it's not title that people judge as their favourites, but the writers.

Oops  well I don't want to start any wars or upset anyone! I didn't realise. I just thought it would be better to start at the begining. But that might be over ambitious LOL.

Hence my feelings of being overwhelmed in the store! :D

I never thought about the writer I just wanted the story to make sense and not start half way through a story line and feel lost. I guess I'll just have sample them then to get a sense of it.

If you want to start at the beginning, I would choose one of the newer versions. Some of them have been around for years & even decades. I still have some of my X-Men comics from high school, as well as the Wolverine trilogy that started him on the road to his own series. My favorite character from the comics in high school was always Nightcrawler, so I would read anything with him in it.

I was just teasing you about the controversial question, y'know, sorry! I haven't learned all the tongue-in-cheek smiley shortcuts yet & am too lazy to go advanced & look them up. :)
