Question on DSL.

Not sure if I placed this is the right place.

I have SBC well now ATT DSL in my home. I have a dedicated cat 5 E line coming in for DSL and one for phone.

On the dedicated DSL line it comes from the outside box to my tech panel. The line ties directly to my 2 Wire DLS modem, out of the modem to a 4 port hub vie a patch cable. The hub splits to a computer upstairs and to my main computer in my office.

Here is the problem I am having. I am able to get on line and surf all over (Actually usually have 3 of Mr. Hubbard’s sites open at once) but if I sit idle for even 20 seconds. My connection freezes up and a window pops up with a program to test my connection. I run the test and if finds nothing wrong and I am able to surf again after I re open all the pages that froze.

I had the ATT guy out he installed the dedicated DSL line and all was fine for a week or two now it’s doing it again.

Anyone ever have this problem?? Any ideas I can try?

Never heard of it. Contact the ISP and find out if it's their software doing it. Otherwise, run some spyware checker software and be certain your systems clean. Sounds fishy to me to be honest.

Thanks,

Looks like I will have to call them again, I run Trend micro internet security 07 and Venus spy trap. Both say my system is clean, funny thing I never had a problem until AT&T took over SBC DSL.

LOL wish I could just slap in some new spark plugs and a set of wires and make it all better. :p

What operating system are you using? Have you done any windows updates before this started happening?

Win XP, Just the standard service pack 2 and some java things I think? It’s set to auto update.

Are you using Firefox or IE7? It sounds like something is going to sleep but I don't have a clue as to why.

IE7

I used Fire Fox but had problems with it and had a real hard time getting rid of that program.

The "hub"....is that a router? Although I've not yet installed my own in-home network and therefore not completely versed in the system specifications, the problem sounds 'software-related', i.e., user-specified and/or able to be updated by the user.

What version of Firefox? I use 1.5.09 and I haven't had any problem with it. I was wondering if you had the same problem when using a different browser since IE7 is new and who know what "features" is may have built into it.

Heh heh.... fyi, the only thing that changed is the name. When SBC purchased AT&T, last year, they decided to keep the "at&t" name since it has worldwide brand recognition. Note the lowercase -- that's the "new at&t".

Otherwise, it's still the same SBC YahooDSL service as it was last year.

Well I just set a system restore point then downloaded Fire Fox 1.0.0.1 so I am running that for now. I guess if this fixes the freezing problem I will just look for a fix to the other problem with FF.

Usually when I type something out to post here or MT and KT I type them up in Word 2003 then cut copy and paste them in the forum. But FF doesn’t seem to accept the cut and copy feature???

Sorry if I am a little off on the lingo myself, I just looked at one of the two what I call hubs they call it a Net Gear, Fast Ethernet switch?

Anyway this may sound crazy but I stepped away from the computer ( making grilled cheeses for the kids) but my system didn’t freeze when I came back with Fire Fox? Maybe that took care of the problem.

Mmm, grilled cheese....love 'em!!

I wonder .. you're not having the same trouble using Firefox? You may want to compare the connection settings for Firefox and for IE. The system may be 'programmed' to check for the connection after the machine has been idle for a given period of time ..... similar to how a screensaver suddenly pops on after a given time. Perhaps this can be changed at the user level?

Or just stop using IE7 that would be easier :)

Well been using Fire Fox since midday on Sat and no problems yet. I had to get used to the new format of Fire Fox but so far I like it, and I’ve kicked IE 7 to the curb LOL.

yup, we do. The only reason I use it is to test site design compatability. Otherwise, I use Firefox (and Safari when Macin it) :D

Not always true. It may be but sometimes even if another company buys something they change some of their items around to fill in holes with the company they bought. Their network also had to be intergrated together, which can cause some problems, although most will say it doesn't.

My guess to the original question. Replace cable, reset the router/switch. Make sure there was not a change in your ip configuration from the company. They may have it set automatically now when before it was PPoE where you had to go into the router most likely and input a password and such. Most setup automatically now which in the past I have had trouble with it setting to the same ip number as the router. Which causes a conflict. Turn the dsl off. Reset your router. Power the router off for 30 seconds. Turn JUST the Router back on. Go in and manually reconfig the ip address to something. (192.168.1.5 or something, because most likely the automatic setting for the dsl modem will be something like 192.168.1.1.)

lol .... hope that all made sense.
