View Full Version : Fashion and Glamour from the 14th Colony
14th Colony 12-31-2006, 11:42 AM Here are some of my portfolio pieces from the old archives. I shot these while in college, in the school studio, in 1989-90. Looking back, I can see all the things I did wrong, with the lighting, with the posing, with the positioning of the hands, ect. I see the well done aspects of these projects but I also see the mistakes, and I see the limitations of each piece's attempts to be perfect. But yet there are still several things I had done right when I prepared the lighting and posed the subjects, and thus I do like these pieces enough to include them here.
14th Colony 12-31-2006, 11:46 AM Not all were done in a studio, and not all were of fine women.
14th Colony 12-31-2006, 11:50 AM In one of my classes in college I had to use a business to put together a mock brochure. I chose the Mai Kai in Fort Lauderdale, and with the general manager's permission I took several photos of the restaurant and their live show, to use in my project. I think I got an A. These are some of the photos that I chose to post here.
I wanted to set up a scene showing a group of people dining, so the general manager told some of his people to put their regular clothes on, and ordered a whole lot of food and drinks to place on the table. After I took the photo I asked him what he was going to do with the food at that point. He said, "You're taking care of that for me. Sit down and enjoy it." I said no problemo, and stuffed my face.

14th Colony 12-31-2006, 11:54 AM In 1989 or '90 I used my very young cousin Maxie for this studio shot I did while in college, for my photography portfolio. The second shot was an ad-on, while the first one with the chalkboard was my original concept and reason for the whole shoot. Maxie was adorable and a ham in front of the camera. She enjoyed herself the whole time and wanted to do more.
After the shoot was completed, my mom and I took Maxie out to dinner before taking her home. Maxie's mom is Japanese, and her dad, my blood aunt's ex-husband, is Jewish. She said the funniest thing while we dined in an Italian restaurant, causing many eyes in the room to turn toward her. She said in the middle of a conversation about her parents, that "I'm half Japanese and half Jewish, and I'm a JAP, a Jewish American Princess!"
You had to have been there. =D

jfarnsworth 12-31-2006, 07:01 PM That's not too bad. They seem alright.
14th Colony 12-31-2006, 11:31 PM Thanks.
ShadowRunner 12-31-2006, 11:58 PM Imperfection in itself is perfection.
To look back and review for yourself is growth.
To assume a negative response is not good for self esteem or growth.
Being open minded (* Which you are as you posted for Critique *) is a good thing.
NOTE: I could not do as well, but that is just knowing my limitation of skill and equipment.
After others have given their thoughts, maybe you should take each one and give it a self critique for us total novices to see what you think is wrong with hand position and lighting.
Thanks
Wolf Braun 01-01-2007, 01:02 AM You've got talent, Ron. There's no denying it. Why the hell were you wasting that talent in a photo lab instead out taking pictures like these?
