Hey bob I have XP service pack 2. don't know if this a help or not but I never had this problem till I bought a Zune MP3 Player I installed it and went and updated it so I had the latest software for it plus Zune has it's own media player that people must use to put music on it. I didn't like it so I took it back removed the software did a search to make sure and search came back empty after that, that's when my modem started to kick me off line and not dial back in

Check and see what your modem is.

Control Panel ---- Phone and Modem
Click on the Modem tab at the top
It will tell you what type of modem you have

Go to google and search for "Drivers for ..... (<--- your modem type)"
Download and Install Driver

You can also get drivers from the manufactures site.

Here are some sites that will help with dial-up modems.
