View Full Version : Toronto Trek 19
Silent Bob 03-14-2005, 02:29 AM On the TT board is a poll on who is going. Interestingly enough, there are no "No" votes. There seems to be little concern there for the lack of guests I've seen mentioned here and elsewhere.
Are those disgruntled grumblings the whine of a few, or is there something else going on?
I'll be honest. I'm very concerned for the cons survival. Other events have hit double digits in guests, while TT has 1.
I am commited to being there regardless, but it would be nice to know that I won't be sitting alone, in a mostly empty hotel wondering why I wasted my weekend.
You won't be alone. We'll be in the same bed :D
Bryan R 03-14-2005, 09:26 AM Almost suredly Jackie and I will NOT be attending Toronto Trek 19 this year. We are awaiting to see if my mother is available to babysit for the April weekend and if she is - looks like Jackie and I will be going to Vulkon, Cleveland instead of Toronto Trek.
I can tell you that I have at least 10 buddies who are passing on TT19 and I also know that T.J. is hesitating to commit, I am not sure yet of Ken and Maggie's plans and I see that Sid is probably not attending.
I am also worried about TT (this will be the first year in 15 I won't be attending and spending my money at TT). Having 1 guest announced this late "just doesn't cut it" and I am tired of hearing excuses, I see Shore Leave has 11 guests and Vulkon Cleveland has 8 and Motor City has 25 and EVEN Vulcan, AB has 2 guests (and they are Star Trek guests). I am hoping that TT20 is a "go" and that they seriously look at bringing back some great guests from the past but at this point TT has to EARN back my business/loyalty.
We will definitely be going to Motor City, MI in May and SFX in Toronto in August if anyone is trying to track us down.
Hell, Vulcan has 2 guests and it's a small con!
Even tho guests arent the reason I go to a con, I like when the con shows some EFFORT....Im not getting that feeling :(

The guests are the main reason I go, but I also enjoy meeting new people and some of the other events around a convention.
It looks like Jackie and I are going to try going to Cleveland to Vulkon (It has Jonathan Frakes - Riker from TNG, George Takei - Sulu for TOS, John Noble - Denethor from LOTR ROTK, Mary Oyaya from Star Wars Ep II & III , Richard Hatch - BSG and 2 guests from Stargate SG-1).
Vulkon also has a dance and panels and a dealer's room and a Masquerade so I want to experience this con (and I really want to meet Jonathan Frakes) and I cannot see TT19 matching this guest list!!
We waited as long as we could for TT19 to announce guests (not guest) but as there has been nothing from there it was time to make our schedule and since almost all my long-time attending friends all decided to pass on TT19 it made the choice easier. Figure why not try Vulkon and meet some new people and if Jackie wants she can enter their masquerade too! :)
TT has lost something.....the guests are not compelling to me. And I don't believe the story about them not being able to get "GUEST A"......waiting too long and not having a backup plan is my guess and now TT is going to suffer for it.
Wrong way to go about planning a CON.
That's "Guest" not "Guests"

True....acually they have 2 guests now....BARRY MORSE has been added.
Silent Bob 03-14-2005, 11:44 PM Who?
Yeah... those new guests.. where was that yawning emoticon?
Can you tell Im SO excited about TT this year?
*rolls eyes*
Since we're kinda stuck going this year, I hope we're not wasting our money >:0
Bryan R 03-15-2005, 09:23 AM I got the email from TT announcing Barry Morse and 2 author guests.
Well that made the decision real easy - Jackie and I ARE NOT going to TT19 at all.
We have bought tickets for Vulkon, Cleveland and will head down in April to see Jonathan Frakes, George Takei, John Noble, Mary Oyaya, Richard Hatch.
Vulkon has a Retro Dance, Panels and a Masquerade so we are going to check it out and see what it is like!
I guess my string of attending TT's ends at 14 years straight. Jackie's ends at 11 years straight.
I wish TT19 well and hope they do wel enough so there is a TT20.

Hey...now give me credit for ALL 13 years in a row that I've gone to Trek. I started the year after you did...LOL!
I liked your comment on the other Board Jackie...about the survey's and how some obsure guy managed to top the surveys ;)

The update from TT was so underwhelming I almost went to sleep.
Who the hell cares about Barry Morse, he was in Sapce 1999, and please don;t hit me for this but I think that the worst sci-fi that EVER hit the TV screen.
Bryan/Jackie, how would you feel like a tag-a-long for the Cleveland CON? Of course I have to talk to Maggie first but I would love to attend this one with you, but I am sure we will talk in the next few days about it. I don't think Maggie can come because of her job but again we'll have to see.
If this si the best the TT ConChairs can do I think they better recruit some different ones for next year.
Ken
Silent Bob 03-15-2005, 04:29 PM Susan and I are "maybe" for Cleveland. We'll let y'all know closer to the event if we can scrape the cash up to go. It's only 2-3 hrs away for us, but the single day rate + food for the day may be out of our budget. Pity they don't have a 1 hr pass. LOL!
Maybe if I show up in the Lum costume, they'll let us in?? :D
Or not v_v*

It would be AWESOME if you and Susan could make Cleveland...I know Jackie is thinking of wearing her Amidala costume and entering the masquerade...I am betting if Susan goes then suredly Jackie would enter! :)
I have not been to Vulkon, Cleveland before but Ken (Kenny G) was there last year, I am betting he could post some of his experiences. I know they have a Retro-Dance on Saturday night and there are panels, guest talks, Dealer's room etc. I am betting we would have fun at the dance! ;)
We could have a "Silent Bob's" MB gathering in Cleveland!! ;)

Works for me!! ;)
I would let you in for sure!! :)
Silent Bob 03-16-2005, 10:24 AM hehehe. :D
Right now, it's a cash thing. We've got a ton of stuff hitting all at once, so won't know until early April if there'll still be cash in the budget. If I get the 1 design job I'm working for it'll be easy. If not, it's penny counting time. LOL!

I have been to this Vulkon twice now. They put on a good CON and are fairly eager to please the paying public, but they can get a little fervent when protecting the stars they are presenting. The autographs are done by calling rows and this works well, TT should have adopted this years ago IMHO, but they are very strict for those in line, last year was with William Shatner and there was quite a few bonus guests that were entertaining as well although we almost missed Billy boy because our car broke down on the way there and we only got to the CON about an 20 minutes before he was orginally scheduled to sign, lucky for us they changed the autograph session times. I was there with Maggie, who is not quite intrested in Trek as much as I so we did not go to the Dance or the masquerade. I love my wife but she is just not as into this Star Trek stuff as I am.
I think that Vulkon is a good convention, not quite as good as TT, but there are less people attending than there is at TT or SFX, last year I think there was about 700 people (my guess only) to see Shatner. It is certainly less of a people crush than SFX. I do find it kind of expensive because it is all in american bucks. We did go to the dinner, which at 65 bucks is kind of expensive but who know who you might get a chance to sit with. Last year we sat with Joe Motes who is one of the organizers, he had some interesting things to say, and we also got to sit with the two kids who played the borg twins in Voyager, cannot remember their names for the life of me. I did not go to any of the panels, but I hear the Hospitality Suite is pretty good.
Bob, I hope you and Susan can attend. I am hoping to be there as well I just have to check out some logistical arrangements, but I am hoping to buy my GOLD ticket this weekend. Unfortunatley Maggie can't go because she can't get any time off. TJ, how about tagging along with us?? hint hint.
It would make the masquerade much more enjoyable to see the lovely Jackie and the fetching Susan in it, and I am sure they would win too, especially with the cheering section we'd have in place. Nice place to use the new digital camera too.
I have found a fairly rare Lt. Thomas Riker action figure that I want to get signed, and also a cast plate that I want Frakes to sign, not sure but I may get George Takei to sign my Klingon Bat'leth, that would make 16 signatures on it in total or maybe a cast plate from TOS.
Let's start planning the Bob's MB get together, who's room is the party going to be in?
Take care all
Ken
The party will be in "whomever has a room" room? LOL
Doing a Masque w/ Jackie would be fun at any con :D
Like Bob says, its all in the $$...what kills me is I need 4 new tires for my truck by the end of the month and then end of april I have to renew my insurance and registration :( Not cheap :(

I got five bucks that says 1 - it will be a guest I do not want to see and 2 - the announcement will be totally underwhelming.
We've been promised big things before and have been continually dissappointed. I, for one, am not looking for too much.
I know I sound bitter, sorry but that's how I feel.
Later
Ken
Didn't you see that it was Shatner's toupee???

Probably after 10PM tonight. The person who does those updates isn't available until after then, but yeah, there will be one.. if not tonight than tomorrow.

Depends on what shows you are a fan of and what you'd like to see. Your viewing habits might be distinctly different than many others.
