A new series on BBC America starting in September based on Dr. Who and from the creators of Dr. Who.

Can anyone tell me about this series?

Thanks

We just saw the ad! I had thought they had decided against showing it here.

It's Capt. Jack and the Torchwood Institute from the recent Dr. Who series. Note that Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who. They are humans who investigate Dr. Who-related phenomena.

Well it was advertised for the Push that COMCAST (* MAY THE ROT *) is having for BBC America. It is a rebroadcast of BBC shows and schedules. I assume they are putting in a delay to hit prime time, but the show is for Digital TV's only and for Digital pay service.

Are you sure they are limiting the show itself? That would be silly, it won't reach anywhere near as many households...

Well I ran across a deal I could not pass up.

I bought a new HD TV. It replaces my 1981 GE 19" color TV.
The new one is a 26" LCD wide screen. I really like it.

In getting a package from Comcast, they screwed up my work order. Nice huh?

So in calling to get a straightened out with the DVR installer at my house, so I got a nice apology package which included what a Wanted for HD service and also now HBO for a year for free. I now get channel 114 aka BBC America. It is replaying on Friday's the first and second season, and I expect the third season over again. The guide stops out at the Christmas Special. Although Torchwood is to be aired on 9/8/07 at 9:00 PM.

Also mentioned on the channel but not sure when the "NEW" season for Doctor Who. I might be able to watch it there with the rest of the UK, and not have to wait for the delay on the Sci-Fi channel.

CBC has Torchwood being aired this Fall.

So our Canadian Friends should be able to see it, as well as those who have access to CBC.

I watched Torchwood, and it's sorta X-Files meets Doctor Who. I quite liked the series but a lot of my Doctor Who friends HATED it. I would suggest checking a few episodes out as they can be VERY different week to week. There is one that takes place in a village that is basically Horror and has nothin to do with Science Ficton in the classic definition.

Therefore, give the series a try and don't dismiss it after a couple of episodes. (In particular not after the Cyberman epsode - which I really didn't like).

I've never seen Dr. Who but I think I may check out Torchwood.
I now have BBCA and digital cable just so I can watch Top Gear so I might as well watch something else!

Torchwood has lots of sex & sexy themes from what I hear, dubs, so you should like it. ;) :D Although, there's no telling how much BBC America will edit. I can't wait till next weekend to see it!

Yes BBC America is running the "first season" marathon today and they have lots of inside looks at Torchwood. More adult and more edgey and with the looks going into character backgrounds.

I watched the first episode of Torchwood last night and I thought it was pretty good, I'll definatly check it out next week.

One question though, why does all British sci-fi look so cheap? The writing and acting is usually good but the finished product just never seems to look that great.

I thought it looked pretty decent. I think the difference is in how much money they have to spend. American TV seems to have gobs of money and the BBC is more conservative in their expenditures. I wasn't disappointed with the look at all, though. I was pleased with the story, characters, acting, premise & look/feel. Definitely going to be tuning in next week!

I love the Welsh accent, too, so it is fun to hear it again. I haven't been back to Wales in... well, they hadn't built that Millenium Place thingy yet, so it must be more than 8 years! My favorite place in Cardiff Center is Cardiff Castle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiff_Castle), especially the roof garden with the smiling Madonna statue (one of only 6 in the world). I usually don't like gaudy Victorian architecture, but Cardiff Castle is definitely an exception to that rule! William Burges (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Burges_%28architect%29) was fantastically talented.

Welcome to the forum, Tardis Girl! I posted on another forum about how Gwen didn't act like she was a very well trained police officer & I just cringed when she did things that no good police officer would ever do, so I agree she needs to grow & develop as a character.

What did everyone think of the third episode? I thought it was quite well done & I didn't even hate Owen as much as I usually do. That device was interesting, I would love to know where it came from, but I guess that we will never know.

That shooting range scene with Captain Jack and Gwen was HOT! I'd go target shooting with that man any day. :D

I also like that they continue to give Gwen a "real" life outside of Torchwood & are also realistic in how her boyfriend handles her lengthy & unexplained absences (good thing he didn't see her on the range with Captain Jack or he might get a little jealous!).

I am not sure of how a proper British Police officer is to behave. But I thought the first episode should she thought out of the box and was curious. These are traits required for someone who is going to be involved in such an organization as Torchwood.

I like the fact that she has a normal life, and her BF is a normal guy. Not some super model. I also think Gwen is attractive.

I saw three and I liked it well enough.

You know what Sci Fi needs (this episode made me think about it when I saw the first "flashback" Gwen had) is a good Gothic Horror story set in a Steampunk Britan.

I really liked the Cyberwoman episode. Any episode that has a Cyberwoman vs. Pterodactyl battle get bonus points, lol!

Seriously, though, I really did like this episode, it had some good plot elemets & character development & I don't have any quibbles at all with the CGI, which was very well done as far as I could tell. I liked Ianto from the beginning of the first episode, but only as a pretty face. Now that we know a lot more about him, I like him even more.

I can completely understand why he felt the need to hide his half-Cyber girlfriend from Jack and the others. They all go out for drinks while he is left behind & no one ever seems to care about him unless he isn't there when they want him or something goes wrong. It's more than a little sad to see him back to being their chore boy at the end, with no one expressing anything personal for him the way you think they might for a member of the team.

I have to say, though, how stupid was that pizza girl, anyway?! She totally deserved to have her brain replaced by the Cyberwoman's, it's not like the pizza girl was using it. Honestly, doesn't she know better than to go down a hidden passageway with no one around?! Have horror movies taught us nothing?! ;) :D

Ok I just saw the CountryCide episode. Ido nto like the plot twist that is occuring between Gwen and Owen. I liked the idea of trying to keep a normal life, but no they jumped straight into Soap Opera realm.

I don't like the affair between Gwen & Owen, either. I liked that she was the only one who had a normal, pretty happy & stable life. Then she goes & gets involved with rat-weasel Owen! Grrrr... Although, the scene with the two of them in the forest was pretty hot... in a "I like the tension, but let's not get them involved with each other" sort of way.

The Countrycide ep was definitely interesting. I liked that it turned out to be a human element, rather than aliens, that made it so much creepier than any other answer would have been. Taking them out of their familiar element of Cardiff was a good idea, youcould see how much more comfortable they all are in the city, with or without cannibals running around. I also liked that Ianto got to do more than provide sandwiches and janitorial support... although he is still definitely still not part of the team in any way, is he?

This is not good we seem to agree. ;)

I really liked the Normal issue of "I enjoyed it" as in Humans can be monsters too.

As to the relationship I had hopes, because here it is:
1) They had a normal looking woman playing a lead.
2) Her significant other was a normal looking guy.
3) It would have been nice to see the relationship issue they went through to keep it going.
4) Owen mumbles. I hate mumblers. I hear everyone else clearly. He mumbles and Ihave to rewind to hear what he says.
5) His character while being a possible for women, as in he is skinny and in shape, I do not like. I figured he was the character we were supposed to love to hate.

But we shall see.

From what I hear from the People Across the Big Pond, Owen is allegedly just as much of a slimy weasel as we think he might be.

In College we had a Ratt Pack - read Frat not recognized by some greek letter. The Weasel was the highest rank one could get, for being Weasely in life. I was the only one to weasel out of being called a weasel. ;)

So, I personally think you might be insulting those weasels and the real weasels, with the reference to Owen. :o

I watched the episode "Cyberwoman" last night as that is how far CBC is up to airing here in Canada and all I can say is - HUH??!!

That episode would definitely not "entice" me to watch the show if it was the first episode I would have seen.

Even for Doctor Who/Torchwood it was way too far out there and definitely not even believable - there was also some "way over the top acting" and you felt little/no sympathy for the Cyberwoman at all caught the way she was.

Next week's episode had better improve or this show will quickly fall off my "must watch" list and go the way LOST did with me (never watched an episode of LOST after the 3rd episode of season 2).

The series has a couple duds, but it has some really good ones too. I like the one they aired here last week with the mind reading amulet and lesbian alien...

I am guessing it had more to do with the lesbian part than the mind reading part? lol That ep was OK, but I really liked this week's ep, that woman was evil! Apparently, they don't require psych tests & polygraphs to work at Torchwood.
