The episode continues from the previous episode Guess What's Coming to Dinner? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guess_What%27s_Coming_to_Dinner%3F) with the mortally injured Cylon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylon_%28reimagining%29) Natalie being taken to the sickbay where, after seeing visions of a green trees, she dies. The Quorum must find a replacement for the assumed kidnapped Laura Roslin but Adm. William Adama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Adama) refuses to support Vice President Tom Zarek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Zarek) in this role. The Quorum can elect a temporary president so Lee Adama solicits the help of a reluctant Romo Lampkin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romo_Lampkin) in choosing the best candidate.
Lt. Sharon "Athena" Agathon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_Eight_%28Battlestar_Galactica%29) is questioned by Adm. Adama in his quarters and as to why she shot Natalie and she confesses to him about the visions she had of Natalie and Gaius Baltar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaius_Baltar) taking away her half-human, half-Cylon child, Hera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hera_Agathon). She is sent to brig.
Adm. Adama must now both protect the fleet and find the rebel basestar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylon_Basestar) with Roslin, half the vipers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_Viper) and half the "jocks" (combat pilots) on board. He orders Col. Saul Tigh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saul_Tigh) to interrogate Caprica-Six (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_Six_%28Battlestar_Galactica%29#Caprica-Six) in the brig to try to get information from her about the "hub" (the nexus which coordinates the operations of all Cylon resurrection ships). Tigh's interrogation/liaison is interrupted when a badly damaged missing raptor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_Raptor) jumps into contact range. The pilot is found dead but the raptor's flight data recorder shows where its jump had originated. A raptor scouting mission to those coordinates finds the remains of a battle with a destroyed Cylon Basestar, viper and what is assumed to be the hub. Adm. Adama does not believe the destroyed Basestar was the rebels ship with Roslin on board and He orders 4 raptors to remain there in case it returns.
Lee Adama and Mr. Lampkin are getting nowhere in finding a suitable replacement for Pres. Roslin, crossing off one name after the other from the list of potential candidates. Romo Lamkin thinks the task is hopeless.
Adm. Adama meets with Col. Tigh in his cabin and confronts Tigh with the infomation that he knows about his “meetings” with Caprica 6 in the brig with the cameras turned off and he reveals to Tigh that she is pregnant. Tigh, in shock, does not deny that he is the father and Adama accuses him of betrayal. Tigh accuses Adama of risking the whole fleet by searching for Roslin. Angers explode and a short but brutal fight ensues between the two men, but the old friends soon stop and accept their unusual emotional predicaments.
Adm. Adama orders the search to continue, much to Starbuck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kara_Thrace)’s dismay who calls it a "suicide mission".
All the names on the list of potential presidential candidates have been scratched but Lampkin realizes that there is only one name who could possibly replace Roslin even if it was not on the list and sets off to find Lee Adama. When he finds him he congratulates him on his successful candidacy, but Lee explains he was never a candidate. Lampkin does not listen and pulls a gun on him. Lampkin is distraught because he lost his wife during the attack on the colonies and does not believe humanity deserves to have a president who gives such hope as Lee would. Lee Adama convinces Lampkin that there is hope and that he will make a difference. Lee Adama is sworn is as acting President.
Adm. Adama will no longer risk his remaining pilots nor the fleet in looking for Roslin and hands over command of the Galactica to Tigh. He takes a Raptor and remains behind.
