Help me understand exporting paperwork going into the US....
I'm trying to do this properly, but I'm hitting too many problems in understanding what to do.
When talking to the border service about bringing my artwork and books to conventions, the border people told me on the phone today that I can't come in to sell my stuff, because I'd be taking away a spot that an American person could be using.
Okay, I see their point.
However, many vendors travel across the borders and sell their stuff here in Canada, and visa versa. How did you get the documents for exporting your stuff, and be allowed to sell it yourself ? Do any of you bring your items in your own vehicles, or do you have to use a border broker. Does having a vendors licence make it easier to get a work permit for the US side?
I'm going to be dropping events if I can't get this straightened out.

Unfortunately I think that some people going across the border are people under-reporting the value and content of their wares. It's easy enough to drive your own stuff across the border saying "I'm going to show my stuff at a convention..." :(

Your best bet is to contact customs. They would be a good starting point. I'll do some digging if I have some free time later.
