Well Jackie and I happened to be in Winnipeg last weekend (it was Canadian Thanksgiving) and we both have family in Winnipeg so by coincidence the Manitoba ComicCon was there the same weekend so we decided to go for 1 day (Saturday) to see what it was like.
We drove to downtown Winnipeg and you know you are not in a big city as the cost of parking (at the Convention Centre) for the whole day was $3.50
The cost of a 1-Day ticket to this convention was $7.50 and a weekend pass was $12.00 so you can definitely see this convention fell into the very affordabel range!
We got there about 9:45am on the Saturday (Doors were supposed to open at 10:00am and weekend pass holders could get in at 9:30am). We looked for the line-up to buy tickets and lo and behold there was none so we walked right up and bought 2 tickets for the Saturday.
We went into the Convention Centre and we were told - just go right in (no line-up!) - I liked that again.
We walked over to the Media Guest area and saw Helen Slater there (SuperGirl) and got a couple of autographs $20 ea from her and both Jackie and I got a picture with her FREE of charge (she is so gorgeous!). We then headed over to Jeremy Bullcoh line (Boba Fett) and stood for about 5 minutes and got an autograph from him this cost $20 and I got a picture with him FREE of charge. We then headed over to John DeLancie line ("Q") and got a couple of autographs $20 ea and also both got our picture with him FREE of charge. We then headed to Gerrit Graham line ("Q2" or "TOSK") and got an autograph from him for $20 and I got my picture with him FREE of charge. We then went over to Erica Durance line (Smallville's Lois Lane) she charges $30 for an autograph so we passed but we got a picture FREE of charge.
We skipped a lot of the guests as we were not interested but none of the lines you were in more than 10 minutes (Lou Ferrigno, David Palffy, Justin Hartley, Herb Jefferson Jr, Gerard Christopher, LeVar Burton) but all the autograph prices were $20 ea and you could get your picture with them for FREE.
Here is a direct quote from the website on how their attendance was for this 2-Day convention. "We had 16,440 people over the 2 days. Congratulations Winnipeg, you've made this event a success yet again!"
The dealers room was small but had some neat stuff (very Star Wars focussed dealers) and there were dealers from as far away as Vancouver and Toronto.
They had a Costume Contest, Panels, Guest Talks, Artist alley as well as a little area where they had volunteers making ballon animals for the kids. They also had face painting for kids.
All in all a neat convention (like a small Motor City Comic Con in Detroit) but with 16,000+ people this year (up from 11,000+ in 2007) - this one is growing and is actually going to be a 3-Day convention in 2009!
I do recommend attending if you get the chance!
