View Full Version : Favorite AD&D edition
Theban 08-20-2005, 01:57 AM What's your favorite edition?
I remember 1E as being just a little complicated (or sophisticated :) ), but 2E (and ESPECIALLY 3E WotC) seemed to market to *ahem* people around the age of 13 or so, for obvious reasons I guess. 1E was IMO was focused on the college crowd.
In the end, I think that 2E wins out. 1E had far too many charts (which I LOVED to use and inevitably bogged down the play). I hate what 3E did to the AC system (inverting the AC scale and all that crap as if no one can understand that a negative AC is damn good). Well, they did make 3E more user friendly for youngsters (and oldsters) with ADHD. Easy to follow along anyway.
So, whaddya think?
Cryozombie 08-20-2005, 11:43 AM Im gonna agree that 2nd was best... since the only exposure to 3rd I had was Neverwinter Nights.
Silent Bob 03-22-2006, 01:21 PM 2nd wasn't bad, but I never really got into it. I liked the simplicity of the old basic set myself.
Kreth 03-22-2006, 02:21 PM The original. The rest of you are AD&D newbies... :p
BlueDragon1981 03-23-2006, 01:00 AM The original was okay didn't like some things about it. I like the 3rd edition rules because that is when I really started to be the DM...so it can attribute my likeness to the time at which I really got into D&D.
Kittara 03-23-2006, 10:25 AM I remember sitting around the table with my borother and sister and all the cousins playing D&D with Dad as the GM. I don't think we had a better time after that... I mean 1st 2nd and 3rd were all nice in their way but basic will always hold that special place in my heart!
I like thed the original series the best, and when they brought out the Oriental Adventures I was truly in heaven.
BlueDragon1981 03-24-2006, 08:08 PM I use the third edition rules of oriental adventure....we haven't been doing that campaign long. I've only created a small world for that one so far. Just a small temple that had to be protected. (the temple is doomed no matter what happens but the players don't know that.) They are now leaving on a mission to catch the person responsible ..... he he he...

I had the entire Kara-Tur set, and several of the OAD&D modules. Then I wrote several adventures that sent my buddies on.
BlueDragon1981 03-25-2006, 04:48 PM I always like to have several story lines running at once. They can choose which one they want to do and generally there are "side" quests along the way. That is why it takes us so long to get one mission done. I wish to play but lately with being busy and such I can't even find the time to post much anymore.....that is why there needs to be 72 hours in a day, and we should only require 2 hours of sleep...lol.
Kittara 03-25-2006, 10:55 PM Playing... hummm I remember doing that a long long time ago. Actually I think the last real game I played was about a year ago and that wasn't that well laid out. I wish people in this part of the country were more open minded about things like that. I'd love to run a game!
I'm a big fan of first edition, but that's mainly for the easiness of character gen.
Bryan R 07-21-2006, 05:12 PM I remember playing the original edition many years ago.
There were a couple of awesome Modules/Campaigns I toroughly enjoyed.
G1-G3 - The Giant Series
Dark Tower
S1 - Tomb of Horrors
Thieves of Badabaskor
Ah...the amount of dice rolling, many drinks consumed, much fun!
blindside 07-30-2006, 04:06 PM 2nd edition (heavily, heavily modified....)
While I learned on 1st edition (and somewhere I still have the d4 & d10 from the basic set (little blue things), it wasn't until college that I really hooked up with a good set of gamers. They followed the 2e rules and so that is where much of my memories are from.
JeffJ 08-01-2006, 11:51 AM I started playing back in the late 70's with the 1st ed. AD&D. Played that up till the time I joined the Army, which was right about when 2nd ed. came out. Since I wasn't a barracks rat I pretty much missed out on 2nd.
I do have to say I really like what 3rd ed. has done to the game. I lke the way the AC is now because it isn't limited to -10. The lack of charts is nice too.
